DURHAM, NC – January 28, 2005 -- Document management company Active Data Services has signed a deal with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina that is expected to lead to more national accounts. BCBSNC for many years has been using two document vendors, Affiliated Computer Services Inc. of Dallas, Texas, and Active, but decided in 2004 toselect a single vendor.

Both Active and ACS submitted bids, along with several other national vendors, and Active won the contract. Michelle Douglas, a spokeswoman for BCBS, would not disclose the value of the contract, but sources put the value of the multiyear deal at more than $5 million.Active was chosen, she says, because it was the low bidder that met specifications. She also points out that BCBS makes it a priority to try to grant business to North Carolina vendors.

Ken Eller, president and chief executive officer of Active, says the win over ACS was especially gratifying for the homegrown company, which was formed in 2002 out of the ashes of Lason Inc. Eller had led the management buyout of Lason's Triangle operations after the company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2001. Lason had patched together its local presence with the acquisition of four companies, SMI Imaging, Lassiter Presort, a division of CSC, and Atlantic Document Centers. "This is what we've been working toward - putting an automated document factory together the way we wanted to," Eller says. He adds that the company had a lot of momentum following the management buyout in 2002. Active sold its presort business in 2003 to document printing equipment giant Pitney Bowes, and Eller hired former Lason executive Arun Singh as chief operating officer.

Active Data is preparing to expand and move into a new location in Perimeter Park in Morrisville. Howard Sadkin, a principal with Corporate RealtyAdvisorsin Raleigh, is representing Active in the lease negotiations. Active will be vacating about 33,000 square feet in Durham and moving its 120 employees later this spring. In 2001, the company had revenue of about $12 million. Eller projects 2005 revenue for Active will be about $13 million compared to about $11 million in 2004.
